Dear John,
We celebrated Independence Day weekend not by declaring allegiance to a flag, but instead by demonstrating allegiance to our Constitution.
On July 1, we joined a rally at Pelosi’s office to defend human rights in the face of our nation’s continuing support for forced displacement and ethnic cleansing in Palestine. Few issues bring into sharper focus the unwillingness of our political culture to confront reality, or the need to speak truth to power.
Then, on July 4, we shared some reflections about the continuing struggle to make real, for all Americans, our nation’s promises of freedom and liberty. Our comments about the vast disparity between our nation’s rhetoric and reality apparently attracted the attention of readers including the editors of FOX News.
Can you help us continue educating the public? We’re eager to keep exposing right wing myths and holding accountable the failures of a corrupt bipartisan corporate establishment.
The headline on FOX’s story read, “Democrat Cori Bush slams the Fourth of July, claims ‘Black people still aren't free,’” with a sub headline reading, “Left-wing activists and news organizations shared comments disparaging Independence Day.”
FOX should explore the distinction between a “claim” based on subjective belief, and an “observation” of objective, inescapable (even if unfortunate) fact.
Cori simply observed the reality of life in America today. Black Americans remain subjected to the recurring theft of generational wealth, continuing discrimination in housing and employment, and environmental racism—even right here in San Francisco.
Too many ignore that slavery remains legal across the United States. Indeed, it is widely practiced within our prison system, including at private facilities that amount to contemporary plantations.
The fight to end slavery—including its legalized practice in the context of mass incarceration—continues. Can you help send us to Washington to finally dismantle it?
There’s nothing quite like waking up the morning after Independence Day to hate mail from FOX News readers incensed by the uncomfortable truth of my comments reflecting on our nation's history.
If the editors and producers at FOX ever bothered to consider Critical Race Theory, rather than simply condemning it, they might be less surprised when people like me and Cori Bush speak the truth.
If their readers consider Critical Race Theory, they might better understand themselves, as well as their own class interests.
Do you want a voice in Congress who not only understands Critical Race Theory, but whose work has put it into practice for 20 years? Having won more votes against Pelosi in 2020 than any previous challenger despite profound obstacles, your support today can help us finish what we started together.
We welcome debate, and frankly appreciate FOX News bringing our voice to a larger audience. From readers of FOX News, to viewers of MSNBC, and those who see through the bias of both networks, all Americans share an interest in promoting our nation’s constitutional values, including freedom.
We encourage every American across the political spectrum to grapple with the reality—beyond the rhetoric—of our “land of the free.”
We won’t stop until America commits to finally becoming “true to what we said on paper.” We’re here to help all Americans realize the promise of liberty—not just the top 0.1% of people wielding the power and privilege of the Pelosis, but everyone.
Thanks for standing with us!
Shahid
