Friday, July 9, 12-1 PM: GMRI's Climate Center | Providing Climate Services throughout the Gulf of Maine

As the Maine Climate Council's work has shown, the Gulf of Maine faces a range of climate-related risks—and Maine Won't Wait lays out an ambitious action agenda to begin addressing those risks. Join Dr. Dave Reidmiller, Director of the new Climate Center at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), to learn more about these risks and response options, as well as how the Climate Center is advancing climate action in the coastal and marine domain throughout the region.

Friday, July 16, 12-1 PM: Making Polluters Pay | Inside the Court Battles for Climate Accountability

As federal officials negotiate climate legislation, what are state and local leaders across the country doing to hold accountable the corporations whose products and decades-long campaigns of deception played a leading role in creating the climate crisis? Since 2017, five states, 20 municipalities, and the District of Columbia have turned to the courts to make ExxonMobil and other major fossil fuel companies pay for the local climate damages these polluters knew their products would cause, as well as hold them accountable for years of lying to the American public and policymakers about climate science and their role in climate change. The U.S. Supreme Court recently issued a ruling in one such lawsuit, from the City of Baltimore, and declined to consider another. Join Alyssa Johl, Legal Director for the Center for Climate Integrity, and Anthony Moffa, an environmental attorney and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Maine School of Law, to learn about the status of climate accountability lawsuits, the arguments they make, and the case for climate accountability in Maine.

Friday, July 23, 12-1 PM: Seabird Conservation in Maine

Conservation actions over the last several decades have restored the entire historic suite of seabird species to the coast of Maine, including puffins, terns, murres, and others. Join Dr. Don Lyons, Director of Conservation Science for Audubon's Seabird Institute, to learn about Maine's seabirds, their recovery and emerging challenges, and Audubon's ongoing research and conservation efforts.

Friday, July 30, 12-1 PM: Understanding the Wildlife and Marine Impacts of Offshore Wind

Offshore wind energy is rapidly becoming a near-term climate solution throughout the northeast. However, this has generated concerns about how wind energy will affect wildlife and the marine ecosystem. Join Dr. Damian Brady, Agatha B. Darling Associate Professor of Oceanography at the University of Maine at Orono, to learn about how scientists at the University of Maine are and will be researching the impacts of offshore wind on wildlife and the marine ecosystem.
