Today marks the six-month anniversary of the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
As criminal cases involving members of the mob who stormed the Capitol wind slowly through the courts, we have still not had accountability for the many far-right leaders who stoked the flames of violent sedition leading up to that day.
We know that Trump very directly incited the insurrection. But a significant number of his close supporters in Congress helped. And far greater number from his party have since worked to whitewash and deny the facts of the incident. It began with the Senate’s acquittal of Donald Trump in his second impeachment and has continued through Republicans’ ongoing obstruction of a deep bipartisan investigation into the event. It’s an outrage.

Last week, after months of stalling and flat-out refusals by Republicans to support a bipartisan commission, the House passed a bill to create a select committee to investigate the insurrection – with only TWO Republican votes.
We need to support the work of the House’s select committee. And we must continue the fight to expose and hold accountable all of the groups and individuals – including elected officials – who helped organize or encourage the insurrection, as well as those who seek to downplay its importance.
Without a full account and understanding of why the insurrection happened and why it can never be allowed to happen again, an event or events similar to January 6 almost certainly will happen again – perhaps with even deadlier results.
White supremacist rage, dangerous conspiracy theories, eliminationist rhetoric aimed at the Far Right’s political opponents (that’s us)… these threats have only grown since January 6.
Just because Trump is no longer in the White House or at the top of every day’s headlines doesn’t mean the movement that he helped radicalize isn’t recruiting, plotting, and raising resources to continue their subversion of our democracy.
At People For, we track the far-right movement closely. And, as you know, we’re battling every day against that movement’s elected representatives in Congress and state legislatures around the country who are using the same Big Lie at the heart of the Capitol insurrection (that the election was stolen from Trump) to destroy American democracy by attacking the right to vote.
