Hi John, After a difficult year, many kids have been looking forward to summer so they can just be kids – playing outside all day with friends, going to camp, being with family and eating burgers and popsicles. But millions of children dread the start of summer as they lose access to free or reduced-price school meals and feel a familiar sensation: hunger. Child hunger in the U.S. grew a lot during the pandemic, which thankfully allowed this crisis to get more attention. But as things return to normal, millions of kids are still going hungry. We can’t forget about them. Send a message to your members of Congress – support the Hunger-Free Summer for Kids Act! With schools closed, children in rural areas often go hungry because they no longer receive school breakfasts and lunches. Many can’t get to places where food distributions are taking place without school buses to get them there. The Hunger-Free Summer for Kids Act recognizes the obstacles millions of kids face in getting enough to eat, especially when school is out. For families who have easy access to grocery stores, it allows them to shop for groceries using a convenient debit-like card. And for the millions of families who live in food-deserts without access to nutritious foods, it allows communities to set up innovative delivery models, such as mobile services and delivery of nutritious meals directly to children’s homes. Tell your member of Congress – with these updates to the Summer Food Service program, we can help feed children all across America, no matter their zip code, during the summer. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
