Liz WillenDear reader,

This week we report on concerns that Black and Asian families in particular may reject in-person learning this fall in favor of remote options or homeschooling. Some of the reasons why these families opted out of in-person learning during the pandemic at disproportionately high rates involve health concerns related to Covid-19. But racial injustices are also a factor. That signals trouble for public school educators, who must find ways to win back these families’ confidence. At the same time, there are huge challenges ahead in terms of helping Latino students — who make up 25 percent of all schoolchildren — recover from the pandemic.

We also look at an important trend for a recovering economy: An increasing number of white-collar employers are reconsidering degree requirements and adopting training systems more common in blue-collar trades, in many cases via partnerships with community colleges. Let us know what other stories we should be telling — we love to hear from our readers.
