My name is John King, and I’m running for governor of Maryland because I see the vision of a prosperous future for our state, built on economic, racial, climate, and educational justice.
But to achieve this vision, I need to win in a tough primary. I’m up against well-connected and well-funded opponents—one establishment insider even joined a law firm that specializes in union-busting, while another sided with Republicans on opposing increased education funding to improve teacher pay and provide students in underserved communities the resources they need to succeed. My opponents are not the unflinching progressive champions Marylanders need fighting for them in Annapolis.

While I supported bills in the Maryland legislature to reduce and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, my opponents were either supporting the construction of additional gas pipelines or blocking a national debate over climate change.
And, while I stood with those in labor to protect and expand a fair collective bargaining process, one of my opponents joined a law firm that regularly brags about helping union-busting corporations.
Hollow half-measures and lip service won't meet the moment. I will fight for progressive climate action, worker protections, and criminal justice reform to make Maryland a place we can be proud of after enduring eight years under a Republican governor.
This fight is personal for me. I live less than 25 miles away from where my great-grandfather was enslaved in Gaithersburg. My ancestors lived with faith in a future they could not see. Now, I am running to be Maryland’s first Black and Puerto Rican Governor to build a just future for all Marylanders.
