Learn about corporate solutions to the climate crisis, and why we should be skeptical of them.
July Meeting: False Solutions: Going the Wrong Way on the Climate Crisis
Thursday, July 8, 7:30 pm EDT
Waste-to-Energy? Biofuels? Carbon capture? The hydrogen economy? Corporate America is full of “solutions” to the climate crisis. What are these visions for a techno-industrial future, and why should we in the climate movement be skeptical? Come hear Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright, Director of Environmental Justice at New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, explain all this to us. With over ten years of policy analysis, community organizing, and outreach/advocacy experience, Anthony’s talk will be one you won’t want to miss!

Just Gowanus: An Interactive Performance Tour Led By GNCJ Members
Just Gowanus is an informational walking tour led by Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice members, combined with interactive experiences and performances by Artichoke Dance. The Gowanus Canal and neighborhood have historically faced environmental challenges due to decades of industrial pollution. The canal was named NYC’s first superfund site due to extreme toxicity. Remediation is underway, and the largest scale rezoning in NYC in twenty years is being proposed for the area. Just Gowanus brings audiences to locations that are significant to the canal’s remediation, as well as the neighborhood’s sustainability and rezoning. Interactive experiences engage tour goers in activism and visioning. Performances entertain and inspire. Tickets are available at the Artichoke Dance website.
It’s Plastic Free July!
Join people all over the globe as we work together to reduce our use of single-use plastics and demand laws that protect the environment from plastic waste. Watch our social media stream and Green Living Facebook Group to see our weekly challenges. One thing you can do RIGHT NOW is to sign up for our July 13th 12:00 pm EDT phone bank where we work to pass the "Skip the Stuff" bill (1775B), which ensures restaurants ask you to "opt in" if you want utensils, condiments, etc. with your take-out food. You can also write to your city council member to encourage its passage!
A WORD FROM OUR ALLIES
Tell The Banks: Stop The East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project
The planned East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is too awful for France's three biggest banks, which have pulled out of the project. But 26 other major institutions -- including JP Morgan Chase -- are still on board to finance the Uganda-to-Tanzania pipeline, which threatens local communities, their water resources, and one of the world's most ecologically diverse regions. Emissions from the oil that the pipeline would carry would release an estimated 34.3 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) per year. Sign this letter to show your opposition to this climate-busting project.
