Welcome to Tuesday, July 6th, incomings and outgoings...

The Dept. of Defense recently announced that the U.S. has pulled out of Bagram Air Base amid the ongoing withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Bagram served as a key hub for air support and logistics for the U.S. and its allies during the last 20 years and it is now under the control of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said that the U.S. will maintain an “over-the-horizon” capability to carry out counterterrorism missions in Afghanistan as necessary, in addition to providing maintenance to the Afghan Air Force from bases in Qatar and potentially Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Biden told the press on Friday that he thinks the Afghan security forces have the “capacity to be able to sustain the government” and that the Afghans will have to carry the load going forward:

“We have worked out an over-the-horizon capacity that we can be value added, but the Afghans are going to have to be able to do it themselves with the Air Force they have, which we’re helping them maintain.”

** SCOTUS Upholds Arizona’s Ban on Ballot Harvesting
------------------------------------------------------------

The Supreme Court recently issued its final decisions of the term, including a ruling that upheld Arizona’s election laws. In a 6-3 decision along ideological lines, SCOTUS overturned a lower court's ruling, thereby upholding Arizona’s prohibitions on ballot harvesting and out-of-precinct voting.

Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee concerned allegations raised by the DNC and its affiliates that some of Arizona’s election policies were discriminatory under the Voting Rights Act (VRA).

Specifically, Democrats alleged that Arizona’s prohibition on counting ballots cast at the wrong precinct had a disparate and adverse impact on minority voters. They also argued that a law banning “ballot harvesting” ― in which a third party collects and returns a voter’s ballot ― was enacted with discriminatory intent.

** And, In The End...
------------------------------------------------------------

On this date in 1957, Althea Gibson won the women’s singles at Wimbledon, becoming the first black athlete to win the event:

In 2019, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) honored Gibson with a statue outside the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York.

Hope you've also been a credit to your country,
