| Dear John: We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing long weekend. Our staff is on holiday today, but the connection never stops! We've got lots going on this week--and some team members continuing their much-needed self-care and vacation time, so this week's episode of Something to Talk About Live is a replay; check out that and more in this week's issue of PFLAG Connects. | | | | | Support Nonbinary Week and International Nonbinary People's Day Nonbinary Week is the Sunday-Saturday (this year it's July 11-17) surrounding International Nonbinary People's Day (which is always on July 14th), and it highlights and celebrates the rich history and diversity of nonbinary folks. With a great and helpful new report out from our friends at the Williams Institute, showing that 1.2M LGBTQ+ adults--that's 11% of LGBTQ+ adults--identify as nonbinary, it's a good time to learn more so that you can serve as a support to nonbinary kids and adults. Many of our chapters offer support meetings specific to families of nonbinary and trans people, so please: If you or someone you know are in need of support for yourself, or a nonbinary loved one, reach out to our Chapter Engagement Team to get connected with one of our chapters! | | | | | Education Three Steps to Being a Better Ally to People Who Are Nonbinary - Learn: Visit pflag.org/blog/nonbinary-resources for great resources to learn more about nonbinary identity, including learning sessions from PFLAG Academy Online (see #2 below), personal blogs written by some of our staffers who identify as nonbinary, and a whole lot more.
- Watch: Check out this great PFLAG Academy Online On Demand learning session, “Supporting Trans & Nonbinary Loved Ones: What Would You Do?” In this session, we review the core learnings for people who want to be allies to their nonbinary friends and family and then put what they’ve learned to work, navigating real-world interactions.
- Share: Use social media to share with your friends and family what you plan to do as an ally to nonbinary folks for Nonbinary Week (Sunday, July 11-Saturday, July 17), on International Nonbinary People's Day on Wednesday, July 14th, and all year long. Share some of our learning resources, or consider sharing this Medium piece by PFLAG National staffer Rakhel Silverman (they/them), or this great article on the history of people who are nonbinary.
| | | | | Advocacy ICYMI: The White House Convening on Transgender Equality Last week, the White House held a first-of-its-kind national conversation on equality for transgender, gender non-conforming, and nonbinary people. Hosted by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, the event featured transgender youth advocates from across the country, transgender leaders and athletes, and senior officials from across the Biden-Harris Administration. The convening highlighted the hopes, joys, and successes of transgender and nonbinary people across the country, as well as the impact that systemic discrimination has on transgender youth in particular. | | | | | Something to Talk About...Live!
