People For Member,

This weekend, as we celebrate Independence Day, let’s also remember that
we are celebrating the founding of what was promised to be the world’s
greatest democracy.

Our democracy has never been accessible to all Americans. But generations
of fighters, from abolitionists to suffragists to civil rights activists,
have put their lives on the line to move us toward a truer, more inclusive
democracy that reflects the egalitarian principles articulated, albeit
imperfectly, in our founding documents.

Now, our democracy is under assault, and centuries of progress are
threatened because the Far Right has decided that their need to hold power
takes precedence over the will and the fundamental rights of We the
People.

Defending our democracy from the threats of voter suppression, Big Money
in politics, gerrymandering, and corruption requires action from our
federal government that is being BLOCKED by an arcane Senate procedure
that has most famously been employed by senators to stall or defeat civil
rights legislation. I’m writing, of course, about the filibuster.

To save our democracy, we must END the legislative filibuster in the U.S.
Senate. Our goal is 40,000 petition signatures to senators from People For
supporters, before the end of the July 4 congressional recess, demanding
this necessary reform.

[ [link removed] ]So, I’m asking you now: Will you add your voice to our growing movement
by adding your name to our petition demanding that the Senate end the
filibuster?

If the filibuster is not removed, the Senate will not pass the legislation
needed to preserve and strengthen the freedom to vote. And other critical
legislation is on the line as well.

Bills to reform our gun laws ... to end police killings … to protect the
rights of LGBTQ+ people … to protect the environment, women’s rights,
workers’ rights, and more … they are all condemned to languish in Mitch
McConnell’s legislative graveyard if we cannot break the filibuster.

The Independence Day holiday should be a time when we recommit to our
democratic ideals and vow to do whatever we can to preserve them, both for
ourselves and for future generations.

This year, you can do that by urging the Senate to eliminate the
filibuster before its abuse damages our democracy beyond repair.
