Hi John --

July 4th is a time to celebrate the American spirit and reflect on what that means. Americans don't just come from one race, ethnicity, religion, or other identity. We are united as Americans by the simple act of calling this country our home. Even though there have always been white supremecist factions here determined to change that, America's diversity continues to be our greatest strength.

Despite extraordinary hardships, people of color have made incredible contributions to American society throughout our history. We've started businesses, educated the next generation, and left our mark on American culture in the arts. We've led this country as public servants at every level of government. People of color built much of what makes America the great nation it is.

However, even on July 4th, there is an unfortunate reality we have to grapple with: The racist nativism that America has always struggled to separate itself from is stronger than it has been in decades.

Republicans have always attacked Democrats for supporting immigrants fighting for a better future, but those attacks have become louder and more overtly racist in the years since Donald Trump decided to run for office. And with every election that a Trump-supporting radical Republican wins, the more normalized these vile attitudes towards people of color and immigrants becomes.

ASPIRE's mission to recruit and support AAPI candidates plays a key role by confronting that hatred head-on. We need AAPI leaders and allies with us in this fight, now more than ever -- especially in light of the host of racially-motivated voter suppression laws being passed in states across the country.

We are proud of the work we've done and endlessly grateful for the support you have shown us as we work together to build a country that lives up to our founding creed: E pluribus unum.

Out of many, one.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July.
