When I reflect back on my career, I realize how much of my life’s work has been dedicated to the preservation of freedom. Paid family leave creates the freedom to pursue one’s passion without having to give up on loved ones. H.R. 1 — For the People Act will ensure that every eligible person in America has the freedom to participate in our government. The Green New Deal will free us from the dual strangleholds of fossil fuels and climate change — and we’ll have a better future.

Today, we celebrate nearly two and a half centuries of freedom from tyranny — but we can’t forget that it’s a constant struggle. Freedom is something we have to work for every day of every year.

So this July 4th, while you enjoy the freedom to see friends and loved ones without fear as we beat back the pandemic, please join me in taking a moment to remember the work still to be done. Together we’ll get there — but only together.
