Hello,

Two hundred and forty-five years ago, the members of the Continental Congress put forth a radical proclamation:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"

These inspiring words led to the creation of a free United States of America and the possibility -- not the guarantee -- of being able to create a democratic nation, free from tyranny and oppression.

In the nearly two hundred and fifty years since the Declaration of Independence was signed, we've taken steps toward actualizing these ideals, but there have also been times when we've moved further away from the ideals of freedom and democracy.

Events such as the insurrection attempt on the Capitol have been painful reminders that our democracy is anything but guaranteed. That it's on all of us -- every one of us who loves our country -- to do the hard work to build a "more perfect union."

It starts with participating in democracy and ensuring our fellow citizens are able to do the same. I'm working hard to pass election reform legislation in Congress to protect and expand the right to vote for ALL Americans.

This Independence Day, I hope you will join me in the fight to protect, preserve, and expand our democracy. Our country's future isn't predetermined -- our actions will dictate where we go from here. We can create a more perfect union and finally live up to the ideals of freedom and equality for all -- but it's going to take all of us staying vigilant and active.
