John,
It’s become a bit of a tradition for me to email you on the Fourth of July, let you know what CREW is doing to protect our democracy, and ask for your support to continue our work.
This year is no exception. While we have a new president in the White House—one who has set and is meeting much higher ethical standards than former president Donald Trump—and a Congress that is considering serious campaign finance, voting and ethics reform, our democracy remains at risk.
The filibuster could block the much-needed democracy reforms of the For the People Act. Corporations like Toyota, Walmart, Cigna and dozens of others are funding the members of Congress who voted to reject election results. We continue to find out about all the ways that Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr sought to weaponize the Justice Department to advance Trump’s personal interests and political agenda.
CREW is working on all of those issues and more—taking legal action, advancing policy proposals, making headlines, and pushing relentlessly for a more equitable, ethical, transparent government. But we can’t do it alone. We depend on grassroots donors to keep up the work, and that’s why I’m asking for your support. A generous donor is matching up to $75,000 in donations to CREW throughout July—can you help us meet that goal?
If you’re able, join us in defending and shoring up our democracy this Independence Day, and have your gift matched by a generous donor.
Just last week, Toyota was greeted on social media by thousands of tweets from people furious at the company, thanks to CREW exposing them as the biggest funder of Sedition Caucus members’ campaigns. All month—and for as long as it takes—we’re going to continue to hold Toyota and all the companies funding the members of Congress who voted to reject election results accountable. And that’s just one small piece of our work.
If you support our transparency and anti-corruption work, please consider making a matched donation. We can’t do it without you.
Wishing you and your family a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
