Today we remember how far we’ve come, how much farther we have to go, and honor the memories of those who set the fuse for the promise of America.

Friend,

Last year, we had to spend July 4 apart. Now, we're slowly but surely getting back together -- and I hope you're able to spend this Independence Day with friends and family in a safe way.

Especially after the past year in our country, it's important to reflect upon the words in the Declaration of Independence that speak of our inalienable rights -- to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And it's even more important that we recommit to doing all we can so that every American can share in the promise of these rights.

Since our nation’s founding, we have inched ever closer to the realization of the ideals voiced 245 years ago. Through a war between the states, two wars that spanned the world, and the still-ongoing marches and protests for the rights of everyone -- not just white men with money and power -- our country has continued on the long road towards truly equal justice and freedom for all.

It is the highest honor of my life to fight for our country’s values as a member of Congress. I know that we still face immense challenges, but as I see more and more people getting involved civically and politically in causes that will advance progress, I am hopeful that we will rise to the duty of making our nation fairer, safer, and more prosperous.

Today we remember how far we’ve come, how much farther we have to go, and honor the memories of those who set the fuse for the promise of America. I wish you and yours a happy Independence Day.

Sincerely,

Jennifer
