This is NOT good news, John:
There are a lot of factors working against Democrats in 2022: The lower turnout that comes with midterm elections, the tendency for midterm voters to favor the party out of power, and Republicans’ efforts to crack down on voting rights.
But according to the analysts at The Cook Political Report, by far the biggest factor working against Democrats is redistricting and the fact that “the GOP will control the [redistricting] process in 20 states with 187 districts, while Democrats will be able to draw the map in 8 states with 75 districts.”
Now don’t get us wrong: All hope is NOT lost -- at least not yet! We’ve made enormous strides in getting Democrats that support fair redistricting to the redistricting table and passing redistricting reform measures since the NDRC launched in 2017. But Republicans have a history of gerrymandering when they have the power to do so, and it’s going to be our job to stop them.
The NDRC will be working to mobilize our grassroots army in favor of fair maps in key states all over the country this year. And where Republicans inevitably try to pass unfairly gerrymandered maps, we’ll be ready to hold them accountable. But none of our work is possible without support from people like you, John.
