I wanted to reach out today -- not as a member of Congress, but as a grandfather.
Like you, I've watched in horror as temperatures across the globe have risen to record-setting levels, temperatures that are literally inhospitable to humans. Forests in the west burn, only furthering the vicious cycle of greenhouse gas emissions. Lakes, rivers, and waterways slowly wither away in the midst of unprecedented droughts.
It is because of this reality that I'm terrified for the planet we are leaving behind for our children. The great promise every parent looks to uphold is that they leave the planet at least a little better off for their children than we ourselves found it. My generation failed to deliver on that promise.
But there is hope -- hope that comes from the leadership of young people across this country. Organizations like the Sunrise Movement are leading protests, marches, and sit-ins to DEMAND that the Biden administration take climate change seriously, to DEMAND that this administration's infrastructure package include the bold investments that the climate crisis requires.
And I am leading the charge with the Sunrise Movement, Green New Deal Network, and House leaders like AOC and Senator Bernie Sanders. I am demanding the Biden administration do more.
