In May, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy proposed a second postal rate increase for 2021, set to go into effect in August. This week, I and Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA) led a bipartisan letter to the Postmaster General requesting he postpone this rate increase until January, 2022. I was joined by 20 colleagues, including Wisconsin Representatives Ron Kind (D-WI-03), Gwen Moore (D-WI-04), Tom Tiffany (R-WI-07), and Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI-05).
I have heard from Wisconsin employers that a second increase in a single year will be highly disruptive and result in significant job losses and significant reduction in their use of Postal Service mail services. Many of these companies, especially small businesses, cannot afford a second increase, saying such action will reduce revenues and lead to job losses.
While we continue to work to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the Postal Service through legislation, I believe it is vital that the Postal Service not take any action that will weaken its long-term financial success by chasing customers out of the mail market.
