Report on Week 1 of Deadline for Democracy actions!

You may have seen news of yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, which severely undermines what’s left of the Voting Rights Act. This is a setback, but it’s not the end of the road -- and now it’s even more important that we pass the For the People Act this summer to ensure real representation for all, then work on reforms to the courts in the coming months. Read on below for more on how you can help right now.

Indivisibles,

TOGETHER, WE WILL WIN.

Across the country, from 40 states plus Washington, D.C., reports are rolling in of amazing events in our Deadline for Democracy campaign to get S.1, the For the People Act, passed. Today, we want to celebrate all your hard work, and invite you to attend one or more of the 169+ events yet to come! Here’s some highlights:

In West Virginia, Indivisibles from Rise Up WV and Pocahontas Indivisible took to the streets after dark to pressure Senator Manchin to abolish the filibuster and pass the For the People Act:

A nighttime photo of people standing in front of an arch. They are holding illuminated signs that read Democracy > Filibuster.

Elders Indivisible, a group based in a retirement community in Pennsylvania, wrapped themselves in paper chains to tell retiring Senator Toomey to unchain our democracy! (The eldest member of Elders Indivisibles is 97, and their average age is 84!)

A photo of 12 people sitting and standing together, draped in a bright yellow paper chain. They are holding a sign that reads Free us from the Filibuster.

Arizona Indivisibles, who logged thousands of hours of work knocking on doors to get Senator Sinema elected, turned out to hold her accountable to the people who put her in office. With voting rights under attack in Arizona and nationwide, and Senator Sinmea still trying to defend the filibuster, they showed up with a cardboard cutout of the Senator holding a sign saying “To heck with the filibuster! Let’s end it NOW.” Then the hired a rolling billboard truck to keep protesting across the state!

Bethlehem, New York Indivisibles made sure not to neglect Senate Majority Leader Schumer, who ultimately will have to hold his caucus together to get rid of the filibuster and get these bills passed. They held a 24-hour “filibuster” rally outside of Schumer’s Albany office to show the absurdity of the rule, which isn’t in the Constitution and has been used for more than a hundred years to block civil rights bills.

A person stands with a megaphone at nighttime. Behind her are people holding illuminated signs. Several of the signs spell out HR1.

In Georgia, Douglas County Progressives and Unite Dallas GA had a joint sign-decorating event last weekend to prepare for their honk & waves on July 10th. The groups' locations are about 30 minutes apart, so they saw this decorating event as a way to team up and grow together!

Seven people stand together holding protest signs under a blue sky

Colorado Indivisibles simultaneously met with staff from ten different senate offices for Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet as part of their statewide Senate office Visit-a-Thon. Here are members of IndivisibleNOCO after meeting with staff in Senator Michael Bennet's Fort Collins office. Volunteers thanked Senator Bennet, who had been protective about the filibuster in the past, but has recently become open to changing it to ensure voting rights get passed, and urged him keep pushing to get S. 1 passed. We are almost to 50 votes to change the filibuster, and pressure on senators like Bennet and Hickenlooper is a big reason why!

Nine people stand in a room together holding signs around a partially obscured sign that says Welcome Michael Bennet Senate. Several of them read We Demand: Democracy 4 the People. No Excuses.

Oregon Indivisibles adjusted plans and bought a lot of water so they could stay safe from the heatwave and still rally to get rid of the filibuster.

The Indivisible Massachusetts Coalition invited Ayanna Pressley, Kendra Hicks, Erika Uyterhoeven, and dozens of activists to fill the steps of the Boston Common, one of our nation’s birthplaces, and rally for voting rights.

A large croud of people with signs stand on stairs together.

Mississippi Indivisibles dropped off postcards at Senator Wicker’s office, one of four events taking place in the state that was home to some of the harshest forces of white supremacy. Check out their video about how to do the same in your area!

A woman stands in front of an office door holding a postcard. A sign by the door reads Senator Roger F. Wicker, Mississippi.

And that’s just a tiny sample! All across the country Indivisible and our allies have been showing up in droves. And we’re just getting started.

Wow! Where’s the event near me?

So glad you asked!

  2. If you haven’t yet seen it, take a second to watch Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra on Rachel Maddow last week, and then share it with a friend. It’s a little out of date now (it was from before the Republican filibuster of S.1 that we’ll need to overcome when the Senate returns) but it gives a great overview of the Deadline for Democracy campaign. Then if you’re feeling inspired, chip in a few bucks to help fund this week of action and all our work.

Ezra summarized it well on Maddow the other night, so we want to leave you with his words:

“Politicians have a very scientific method for figuring out what they’re going to do. They lick their finger, they stick it up in the air, and they see which way the wind is going to blow… If we are successful in changing the way the wind blows over the course of the July 4th recess, they’re going to take this up again, they’re going to amend the filibuster, and they’re going to pass these voting rights reforms.”

Thousands of Indivisibles have already shown up to take action. If you’re ready to join them and make sure the wind blows towards democracy, RSVP for an event now.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
