As our country prepares to celebrate Independence Day, voting rights are under attack. Elections are the backbone of our democracy. Yet nationwide Republican-controlled state legislatures are passing laws to restrict voting access, especially impacting Black and brown communities and young people. Just this week, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold two restrictive anti-voter laws in Arizona that disproportionately impact people of color, young people, the elderly, and disabled people. Congress must act now to protect voting rights.

The For the People Act to expand voter access and protect the right to vote has passed the House but is languishing in the Senate under the threat of a filibuster.

For the People Act of 2021 expands voter access for all. It provides automatic voter registration, same-day voter registration, and online voter registration in every state. It limits a state’s abilities to purge eligible voters from the rolls and ensures that disabled voters can register and vote absentee. It expands access to early voting during federal elections and requires states to allow any eligible voter to vote by mail.

Despite wide bipartisan support among the public Republican senators, led by Mitch McConnell are using the filibuster to prevent the For the People Act from coming to the Senate floor for even a debate.
