Friend,
We have a long Fourth of July weekend coming up, and I didn’t want to let it go by without saying thank you.
Because whether you have donated, volunteered, or are just keeping yourself informed, these are important steps toward building a more just, loving nation that is true to the words of our founding documents.
To me, this year’s 4th of July is a time to reflect on how far we still have to go. In defeating this pandemic. In guaranteeing liberty and justice for all. In defending against the continued assault on the right to vote.
On this day in which we celebrate our independence and freedom from a government that sought to take people’s rights away, I think it’s all the more important that we recognize, celebrate, and protect every American’s right to vote, to make our voice heard, and to work together towards building a more perfect union.
We just celebrated the first federal Juneteenth holiday last month, another reminder that when it comes to achieving true freedom, we have much more work to do.
To me, true patriotism is love of country and you can’t love your country without loving – and doing right by – your fellow countrymen and women. Getting vaccinated. Defending the right to vote. Standing in solidarity with those who are most vulnerable. These are examples of true patriotism.
I hope you and your loved ones have a safe and healthy holiday weekend as we continue to reflect and put in the work — together — to overcome our challenges and strengthen our American values of freedom and justice for all.
