As you know friend, Mitch McConnell reversed his support for a bipartisan Senate investigation into the January 6th insurrection and now we have to make do with the second-best option: A Democratic-led commission in the House.

But The 147 took their purge of disloyal Republicans to shocking new heights today when Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced that any Republican who accepts a seat on the January 6th commission will likely have their committee assignments stripped.

McArthy’s slightly veiled attack was directed at his former lieutenant Liz Cheney who has already accepted a seat on the commission. Cheney was of course recently ousted from her position as Republican Conference Chair, the #3 ranking Republican position in the House, for having the audacity to call out The Big Lie.

McCarthy’s threat to his party makes it clear that the removal of Cheney from leadership wasn’t a one-off. The Minority Leader is conducting an insurrection to guarantee the success of Trump’s comeback tour in 2024. Any Republican who even thinks about getting in the way will be punished severely. The 147’s authoritarian ambitions are on full display in miniature.

If Kevin McCarthy is punishing Republicans for doing the right thing and undermining democracy now, imagine what he could do when he is in the majority.
