NEW RESEARCH

** More than 60% of suicide attempts among LGBQ people happen within five years of realizing they are LGBQ
------------------------------------------------------------

Using a representative sample of LGBQ people in the United States from three age groups—young (18-25), middle (34-41), and older (52-59)—a new study finds that most suicide attempts (61%) among LGBQ people occur within five years of realizing their sexual minority identity. However, a significant proportion of attempts (39%) happen outside this age range. An estimated 24% of the middle cohort and 29% of the older cohort report first suicide attempts at age 26 or older. Half of the attempts in the older group happened after age 41.

------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]
We are pleased to announce that Jody Herman has been named the Reid Rasmussen Senior Scholar of Public Policy at the Williams Institute. Since joining the Institute as a research fellow in 2010, Jody has put the Williams Institute on the map as a national leader on transgender-related research and public policy. Her research has been critical in documenting the presence and impact of discrimination on the health and socioeconomic status of transgender people and has informed laws and policies that provide nondiscrimination protections to transgender people nationally and in a number of states.

In addition to her many publications ([link removed]) for the Williams Insitute, Jody has co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and over 50 white papers. She has served as an expert in lawsuits regarding transgender discrimination, including ongoing litigation regarding the transgender military ban. Her research has appeared widely in the media, and her research continues to be cited frequently by researchers, legislators, policymakers, attorneys, and state and federal agencies. We are honored to have Jody as part of our team and congratulate her on her new position.
