Hi John,

Wisconsin's legislature is risking our lives.

The so-called Second Amendment Sanctuary bill, which the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly recently passed, threatens the safety of Wisconsin residents. Legislation like this results in confusion or willfully unenforced gun safety laws.

To help shed light on this dangerous gun bill, we partnered with the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence to host an issue briefing. Watch this conversation to learn what the bill says, what it could do, why it is dangerous, and what has happened in other states that have tried to pass similar legislation. This discussion is led by James Santelle, JD, Vice President of WAVE Educational Fund's Board of Directors and former United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and Anneliese Dickman, JD, Midwest Program Manager of Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Here are a few key things you should know:

  • Lifesaving gun violence prevention laws are constitutional
  • A state legislature does not have the power to nullify federal laws
  • The Second Amendment is not under threat.
  • It is dangerous for state legislatures to try to circumvent federal law and the Constitution.
  • A nearly identical law passed in Montana and was struck down by the 9th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals.
  • This bill may embolden certain law enforcement officials and private citizens to ignore or violate lifesaving federal laws.

Clearly, this is dangerous legislation, and that is why we'll be asking Governor Evers to veto it. (Watch for action emails from us in the coming weeks.)
