Dear John,

Happy Independence Day from all of us at the Bill of Rights Institute! We hope that you are enjoying some well-deserved time off with your loved ones.

As we pause to celebrate our nation's independence and the ongoing story of American freedom throughout our history, we also wanted to take a moment to share a new lesson from our free digital U.S. history resource, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
that looks at William Lloyd Garrison's "The American Union" and "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” by Frederick Douglass. The lesson includes comprehension questions and historical reasoning questions for you to explore with your students. More lessons like this are available in the textbook. Sign-up below for access to the entire book!

The Fourth of July celebrates not only the story of America’s Independence, but also the individuals who have contributed to the ongoing story of American freedom throughout our history. Join BRI Staff as they share their own family heritage stories, including their journeys to America, bravery in fighting for our nation, and continued celebration of their culture today. How did those that came before us exhibit the values of courage, perseverance, and patriotism that give us the freedom to celebrate July Fourth? What is your family heritage story? Share it with us on YouTube or social media!
In closing, The Fourth of July is a time for reflection on America and her people. In honor of the holiday, we put together a website playlist of some of our favorite stories of freedom that exemplify the spirit of this holiday. I  hope you and yours have an incredibly joyful 4th celebration!

Sincerely,

Laura Vlk
