Welcome to the latest edition of Denton and Reddish Weekly News, I hope that your week has been a good one. It promises to be an even better weekend so long as England win their quarter-final game tomorrow!🤞⚽

This weekend marks the start of Independents' Day Weekend, which aims to encourage individuals to support local retailers. There's some fantastic retailers all over the constituency - so make sure to shop and support local!

The next stage of easing for remaining lockdown restrictions is scheduled for the 19th of July. In the meantime, here are the restrictions as they stand.

Gwynne joins new cross-party group calling for total ban on trophy hunting

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has joined the newly formed All-party parliamentary group on Banning Trophy Hunting. It comes as new figures highlight the fact that British hunters are bringing back growing numbers of hunting trophies of animals.

The Government has pledged to ban trophies of endangered species. However, animals including zebras, reindeers and striped hyenas would all fall outside of the ‘sufficiently endangered’ category, and therefore fall outside of proposed Government legislation. A recent opinion poll carried out by Survation revealed that 85% of voters want a total ban on all hunting trophies.

In 2019 – the most recent year for which full CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) data is available – British hunters brought back 195 trophies of protected species, up 79% on the previous year’s figure.

They included tusks and other body parts of elephants, bears, giraffes, hippos, leopards, zebras, monkeys, and ‘canned’ lions bred in captivity and hunted within fenced-in enclosures.

The group will be chaired by Sir Roger Gale MP, with Baroness Hayman sitting as co-chair. The Campaign To Ban Trophy Hunting – led by Eduardo Goncalves – will act as secretariat to the group. Goncalves has recently written a book entitled ‘Undercover Trophy Hunter’, which exposes a number of Britain’s top hunters, and also details the extreme cruelty of the practise. Gwynne joins a number of cross-party officers who will sit on the group. The APPG has also earned the support of high-profile animal activists including the comedian Ricky Gervais.

speaking after joining the group, Gwynne said:

‘’I am very proud to be a member of this new APPG. Trophy hunting is barbaric, cruel, and has no place in our society.

It’s time that we saw robust and strict legislation which introduces a total ban on all hunting trophies. By introducing such a ban, Britain can become a global leader in helping to protect animals.

I look forward to working with other members of the APPG to secure a comprehensive and properly enforced UK ban on trophy hunting imports.’’

Gwynne supports new Royal Mail postal apprenticeship scheme

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is backing the new Royal Mail postal apprenticeship scheme which launched this week.

The new scheme is designed to provide applicants with the required skills for a successful career at Royal Mail. Areas such as customer services, industry knowledge, lessons in financial budgeting and wellbeing will be covered.

The scheme represents one of the UK’s largest intakes of apprenticeships, and will aim to offer up to 1,000 Level 2 Apprenticeships which will be based at delivery offices across the UK.

Many senior Royal Mail employees – including Ricky MacAulay, Operations Development Director and Executive Board Member – began their careers through the former Postal Cadet Scheme which ceased in 1996. All applicants who successfully complete the scheme will be offered a permanent role

The scheme opened for applications on Monday 28 June and the initial cohort of 500 apprenticeships will begin in September 2021. Royal Mail will make a further announcement in relation to the remaining 500 apprenticeships at a later date.

Commenting on the new scheme, Gwynne said:

"This is a fantastic initiative by the Royal Mail, and I would encourage anyone in my constituency who is interested in a career with the Royal Mail to apply.

Apprenticeships are the key to unlocking the potential of individuals up and down the country, and offering these kind of schemes is key to rebuilding after the effect that the pandemic has had on jobs and the economy.

That’s why I’m so pleased that Royal Mail are offering this scheme, and I hope we see many more from other employers in the future."

Gwynne supports Sarcoma UK's campaign to increase awareness, funding and research

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has marked the start of Sarcoma Awareness Month by pledging his support to a campaign calling for the rare but devastating cancer to be given more specialist research funding.

Sarcomas are a group of rare but devastating cancers of the soft tissue and bones. Sarcoma is often referred to as ‘The Loneliest Cancer’ due to it’s rarity and lack of accurate diagnosis and treatments. 15 people are diagnosed with sarcoma every day, and of those 15 only half will survive for five years.

Symptoms of sarcoma include a lump that cannot easily be moved around and bone pain. If you are exhibiting one or more of those symptoms you should see your GP immediately to have your symptoms checked.

Sarcoma Awareness Month is organised by the charity Sarcoma UK. In 2011, the Sarcoma Trust and Sarcoma UK merged to become a new single charity for sarcoma patients, carers and relatives in the UK.

Ten years on and Sarcoma UK has invested more than £4.3 million into scientific and medical research; supported almost 2,500 people through the Sarcoma UK Support Line, and worked with national governing bodies, sarcoma specialist centres and organisations to advocate for better and earlier treatments for people affected by sarcoma.

Speaking at the start of Sarcoma Awareness Month, Gwynne said:

”Sarcoma is such a devastating disease, but is often overlooked and ignored. That needs to change.

We need to see increased funding earmarked for specialist sarcoma care and research, and need to make sure that people are aware of how to spot the early signs of sarcoma.

Catching cancer early is the best way to have a positive outcome. I would urge anyone who has bone pain or a lump anywhere on the body which is increasing in size to contact their GP immediately.”

TREASURE HUNTING AT THE DANE BANK JUMBLE SALE

I had such a fun Sunday afternoon at the Dane Bank Jumble Trail with Councillor Brenda Warrington.

It’s was all organised by Denton West End Community Library and St Georges, Dane Bank, Denton to help fundraise for local good causes including the library.

I started at the library and wandered around the estate. There were lots of houses with their own stalls en route, ending at St George’s. We both picked up a few bargains along the way!

CARE FOR THE SQUARE

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came out in Reddish on Saturday morning to help give Houldsworth Square a bit of TLC. I was pleased to join them.

A big shout out to Councillor David Wilson for organising it, and to the Friends of Reddish Vale Country Park and Morrisons Reddish for the kind donation of bedding plants. The square is looking fabulous now. Thank you!

WHAT A BUZZ AT THE WORKER BEE MARKET

I had a fantastic afternoon over at Broadstone Mill in Reddish for the monthly Worker Bee Markets on Saturday. It was bigger than ever this month, well done Claire!

This month very local producers get to display “I’m local to this market” signs. We’ve a great selection of small traders across Denton and Reddish, and I’ve showcased the ones I visited on this post

To speak in Parliament at the moment you have to be successful in a number of randomly shuffled ballots. Next week I'll be hoping to get picked a few more times!

📺 WATCH: There’s been an Urgent Question granted in the Commons to ask what the Government is doing to help children and families affected by COVID and self-isolation. I ask about the growing inequality through lost education support. Not sure I got much of an answer...

📰 READ: Tameside Reporter picked up my comments on the fantastic support that Friends of the Tame Valley volunteers got from SUEZ UK in removing litter and fly-tipping from sections of the Tame Valley. 8 SUEZ staff were joined by Cllr Peter Robinson and 6 other volunteers from FOTV to help clean-up around Dunkirk Lane, the Peak Forest Canal and inside Dunkirk Wood.

I'm very proud to be secretary of FOTV - and want to thank SUEZ UK and all of the volunteers for such a successful litter pick. Well done all! 🧹💚
