Holly Turner from NHS Workers Say No guest writes for the People's Assembly about this weekend's NHS protests:
To mark the 73^rd Anniversary of the NHS this Saturday 3^rd July, NHS Workers Say No, Keep Our NHS Public, Health Campaigns Together and NHS Staff Voices have worked collaboratively to build Protests in approximately 70 towns and cities across the UK with three clear demands, Pay Justice Patient Safety and an End to Privatisation. Central to the success of building these events has been bringing workers, campaigners and communities together to make political demands; because this affects us ALL and we are stronger together in our fight.
The facts are very clear, we have experienced a decade of underfunding , the NHS budget has NOT been protected so we have faced brutal cuts to services, there is a crisis in recruitment, half of all staff in the NHS report that the current situation stops them doing their jobs properly, we have less beds per capita than any other comparable country and cuts to Social Care services have added huge pressure to the NHS as there are simply not enough services available to support vulnerable people in our communities. And we also have private companies like Virgin continuing to win big contracts to run struggling NHS services for profit
We find ourselves in a critical moment, we have 100,000 vacancies across the NHS, over 5 million people sitting on waiting lists NHS Workers continue to wait for their pay award which was due in April, delayed till mid-June and has been delayed yet again. Why? We must demand answers to these questions, we will not allow this government to abuse the goodwill of staff to deal with the staffing deficit we are struggling with. Investment in staffing is about both patient safety, and the health of our workforce. In addition, in Sajid Javid we have a new Health Secretary who we know is an advocate of a US-style private insurance-funded health service. The fight now is more urgent than ever because the consequences of not fighting back now, will be very serious for us all.
And for our workers, yet more research has been released this week which evidences that insufficient PPE has been used to protect frontline staff against the COVID. Workers and their Trade Unions have been calling for this to be reviewed for the past year, yet repeatedly we have been ignored and in fact, accused of wasting PPE. What we now know is that there has been avoidable death and illness in workplaces due to this Government prioritising crony contracts and profit over frontline workers who have given, and continue to give their all.
This is why we are encouraging people to take to the streets this weekend, the NHS was created 73 years ago and now together we need to fight for its future.
All events have been risk assessed and are COVID safe. We urge anyone with symptoms or who is clinically vulnerable to stay at home. We are also encouraging all attendees to socially distance and wear a face covering.
