John -- After yet another disappointing Supreme Court voting rights decision yesterday, A.G. Holder said: “We are getting by with an electoral system on life support.” Before the Supreme Court gutted key protections of the Voting Rights Act with the 2013 Shelby ruling, the law’s “preclearance” provision held states accountable to fair elections and enfranchised voters by:

• Requiring states with a history of voting discrimination to receive approval (or “preclearance”) from the federal government before making any changes to their election laws.
• Blocking discriminatory voting changes in several states such as Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
• Allowing the Justice Department to reject redistricting maps designed to dilute the power of voters of color.

For the first time in more than 50 years, we’re entering the redistricting cycle without these essential protections from the Voting Rights Act. It’s up to us to hold map manipulators accountable.
