FEDERAL

This week we are highlighting 2 great examples of advocates calling out Senators Scott and Rubio for their utter and complete nonsense and lies.


Senator Rick Scott Introduces Legislation Prohibiting the Federal Government from Requiring Masks on Public Transportation
 
Senator Rick Scott introduced the Stop Mandating Additional Requirements for Travel (SMART) Act to prohibit the federal government from requiring Americans to wear masks on public transportation.
 
Senator Rick Scott said, “Americans are working hard to recover from the devastation of COVID-19 and travel is critical to getting our economy fully re-opened. Since the start of the pandemic, I have supported wearing a mask to protect yourself and others. Now, the science has shown we can change course, and mask mandates are being lifted across the country. Just like the federal government should not be in the business of requiring Americans to turn over their vaccination records, it should not be mandating that people wear masks on public transportation. The science just doesn’t support keeping this policy in place. We have to listen to the science and work together to move America forward. I know Americans will do the right things to stay safe, and I hope my colleagues join me in passing this important bill.”
 
It's interesting how all of the sudden Scott is interested in science.  Science is now a tool for him – use it if it gets him what he wants, deny it if it doesn’t.

Democrats Block Senator Rick Scott’s Bill to End Federal Mask Mandates on Public Transportation
 
Senator Rick Scott was joined by Senator Lee on the Senate floor to speak about the Stop Mandating Additional Requirements for Travel (SMART) Act, and ask for its passage by unanimous consent. The SMART Act would prohibit the federal government from requiring Americans to wear masks on public transportation. Senate Democrats blocked its passage. Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) is introducing companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
 
Senator Rick Scott said, “While we choose to listen to the science, all the Democrats care about is following their political science. The CDC itself has been clear mask mandates aren’t needed. So, why is the CDC singling out airlines and public transportation? It doesn’t make sense. Just like the federal government should not be in the business of requiring Americans to turn over their vaccination records, the federal government should not be mandating citizens wear masks on public transportation. Americans should be free to make choices they feel are in the best interest of their own health and the health of their loved ones. We have to listen to the science and work together to move America forward.”
 
The WHO continues to advise wearing masks, even if you are vaccinated, due to the severity of the Delta variant.

Our Unhinged Governor

In perhaps the most bizarre and unsettling voting rights news of the week, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation into law on Tuesday that requires students and faculty of public Florida universities to report their political views to the state starting this July. House Bill 233 requires university students and faculty to fill out a survey from the government about their political beliefs in what Gov. DeSantis has called an effort to monitor “intellectual diversity” on campus. Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson (R), echoing the Governor’s sentiments, said that there was a “great risk” that the state’s universities had become “socialism factories.” Democrats and university faculty have attempted to get answers from state Republicans on how these survey results will be used, as the bill provides no guarantees or protections against partisan targeting of campuses and staff and does not protect student confidentiality.
 
The move to “diversify” campus speech comes just a few days after Gov. DeSantis publicly supported the banning of critical race theory and announced he would campaign against any school board members who promote teaching the history of racism in America to Florida students.
 
The Governor of Florida, is mandating that college staff and students essentially “register” their personal beliefs.  This is beyond frightening.  DeSantis and the GOP Florida legislature are out of control and we must work diligently to ensure he is a one term Governor.

Adopt a School or Classroom
 
As the new school year approaches, teachers and students need our support more than ever.  The Education Foundation of Indian River County is currently looking for donors to Adopt-A-Class or Fund-A-Project.  If you would like to do that, you can go to their website here https://www.edfundingirc.org/ to pick a classroom or project. 
 




















 




Donate - School Supply Drive!

 
 
Both the Gifford and Fellsmere students are looking for school supply donations.  Some suggestions are: pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, notebooks, paper, art supplies, and backpacks.  Donations can be dropped off at Democratic Headquarters at 2345 14th Ave., Suite 7, Downtown Vero Beach, 32960, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 



 



GET INVOLVED
 
The Democratic Executive Committee of Indian River County is looking for volunteers to fill three positions on the board.  If you are interested in one of these positions below, please email Stacey at [email protected]
 

Chair
 
Chief Executive Officer of the IRC County Committee, working in cooperation with the Steering Committee (officers of the Committee). Presides at all meetings of the DEC and of the Steering Committee (3 meetings per month); advises the Secretary of any special meetings in sufficient time for proper notice; approves all expenses; serves as ex-officio member of all committees; promulgates an annual precinct organization activity plan, a campaign schedule, plan and budget for each election cycle; serves as primary official spokesperson for the DEC; attend FDP trainings and workshops; and delegate these and other duties as the need arises.
 
 
Secretary
 
Attend and keep minutes and record of all meetings of the DEC (3 per month); submit copies of minutes and records for the DEC files to the FDP; keep roll at all DEC meetings; accept applications of new members; take minutes at DEC Steering Committee meetings; and perform other such duties as the Chair shall direct.
 
 
Florida Young Democrats of Indian River (FYDIR)

DEMOCRATS OF INDIAN RIVER
 

The Democratic Club of Indian River
 
4th Of July Parade Sebastian Marchers Needed
Date: Saturday, July 3rd
 
We are limited to two vehicles and a maximum of 20 Marchers. We will have one Mustang convertible and one pickup truck and are asking for 20 volunteer Marchers.  Marchers and vehicles will be given their assigned placing based on their time of arrival.  Line-up begins at 6:30 am (marchers should plan to line up no later than 8:00 am) at the intersection of Jackson St. and Old Dixie Hwy in Sebastian.  The parade will step off at 8:30 sharp.  The route will continue along N. Central Ave., turn east on Davis St., then turn right on Indian River Drive. The termination point will be past Riverview Park on Indian River Drive.  There will be limited room for passengers in the two vehicles.  The entire parade route is a little over one mile.
 
We need approximately 5 more volunteer Marchers for the Parade.

The next in-person Club Members meeting will be on Tuesday, 7/13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Irish American Society, located at 1314 20th St., Vero Beach.  It will be an Ice Cream Social (make your own sundae) and an open general organizational and planning meeting.  Claudia Martino and Bob Bruner will co-chair the meeting.
 

Volunteers are needed to help check in members and guests at the Democratic Club meetings. It is a fun way to meet like-minded people and make them feel welcome. If you are available, please contact Valerie Daley at [email protected].
