Dear John,
The Supreme Court has just handed down a devastating ruling against the Voting Rights Act, in the Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee case. The decision means that Arizona lawmakers will be allowed to silence voters based on where they live, suppressing voting rights in marginalized communities and making it more difficult to challenge discriminatory voting laws in the future.
This decision is a last chance, five-alarm fire to all Americans who care about protecting the foundational right to vote—we must invest in state legislatures, which will play a more important role than ever in protecting the rights of American voters. State legislatures are the final boss in the Republican quest to vanquish democracy. We cannot cede this fight to them.
Here’s how we do it. At Sister District, we are working in priority states, like Arizona, year after year to build the enduring progressive power needed to protect voting rights and advance policy that improves people’s lives. We proudly supported seven inspiring Democrats in Arizona 2018 and 2020, and we’re determined to support more in 2022.
John, we’re asking you: will you donate $20.22 to help us flip Arizona blue in 2022 and ensure all Americans can vote, regardless of zip code or color?
The Roberts Court cannot and will not protect voting rights. Neither will the deadlocked federal government. It’s now clear—on voting rights and so much more, the buck stops with state legislatures. We must invest downballot now, or risk becoming a nation where your right to vote depends on where you live, and your access to the polls depends on the color of your skin.
The Court is not going to save us. We cannot count on Congress saving us. We must act, and we must act now.
In solidarity,
The SDP Team
