Subversion Through Education
with Robert George and John Agresto
The American Experiment Video Series
Conversations on Politics, Principles, and History

.
The United States changed history when it charted its course as the first nation founded not on race, religion, or monarchy — but rather on a set of ideals, meant to give each citizen the freedom and opportunity to create their own paths.

Such an ambitious charter requires an educated people that understands those ideals in order to make them a reality.

Yet, we all know civic education is a current topic of great controversy. In a time when knowledge is sorely needed about what unifies us as a people, we are only doubling down on our differences.

Our country's own history and founding principles are being called into question: Is America irredeemably racist? Were we founded in 1619 rather than 1776? Does constitutional democracy and capitalism enshrine systemic oppression rather than protect our freedoms?

Today's charged political climate is shifting critical thinking exercises—meant to help students make informed decisions—into partisan presentations of material that teaches students merely to be critical about America instead of teaching the full story.

Education must not devolve into indoctrination. We are a country that values independent thinking. And that requires knowledge of what our country is about.
Teaching about our founding principles and shared American values need not press a blind allegiance to great historical figures. It should include our failures and shortcomings, but not make that the central story. It isn't.

Young citizens need a comprehensive and truthful education about what we have accomplished, where we have failed, what areas are yet to be fully realized, and how we can continue to advance the American Experiment.

In our second episode of our video series, Robert P. George ([link removed]) of Princeton University talks with John Agresto ([link removed]) of the Jack Miller Center Board about student education, the effect of the 1619 Project, and what role our educational systems play in creating patriotic Americans.

Happy Independence Day!
Independence Day has only been a federal holiday since 1941, but July 4th has been celebrated as our country’s birthday since the eighteenth century.

Fittingly, the first celebration took place in Philadelphia, site of the Declaration of Independence (and home of the Jack Miller Center), in 1776, mere days after the Declaration was signed. The celebration continued as an annual event in Philadelphia and soon became widespread in the new nation.
July 4th marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Please join us in celebrating the birth of our country. To learn more about the Declaration of Independence and the founders vision for a free society, please visit our website discovery page.
