NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

+ NEWS: Toolkit Save the Date - It’s Our Backyard Too: Be on the lookout for our new Community Engagement Toolkit titled "It's Our Backyard Too: Building Community-Centered Support for Harm Reduction" launching July 13th, 2021. The toolkit will explore values creation, combating NIMBYism, working with elected officials, funding/budgeting, and much more! NHRC’s Policy and Advocacy Team will host a series of three webinars to dive into the practices that the toolkit explores, including a fishbowl values creation live module (July 15th), a panel highlighting the experiences of our Harm Reduction Case Studies (July 22nd), and a specially curated live module that is informed by community and answers any lingering questions folks have after going through the toolkit (September 2nd). Make sure to save the date.

+ NEW RESEARCH: Research Adds to Weight of Evidence on People Checking Drugs They Sell- "From the resulting 27 qualitative interviews, they found people felt that drug checking using the various strips, kits and machines could increase accountability and consumer power in the unregulated market. Additionally, it could potentially change attitudes surrounding drugs and the people who use them, and might increase interest in harm reduction.

Wallace acknowledged the potential benefits of having people who sell drugs check the contents of their wares prior to sale, while noting the overlap between people who use and those who sell. “There is interest in drug checking as a market intervention—interest from people who buy and sell,” he told Filter."

+ NEWS: R.I. poised to authorize supervised drug use centers- After an intense debate, the House passed a bill for “harm reduction centers” and the Senate is set to vote on the legislation Thursday.

EMERGENT AND EXCITING WORK

+ EVENT: Untangling Latinx: The urgency to disaggregate by ethnicity. Tune in July 22nd, 4-5:30 PM EST for this first webinar in a series that will focus on people who use drugs and unpacking the Latinx category in order to develop culturally and linguistically appropriate research, health promotion and harm reduction programs. We will delve into Puerto Rico as a case study of vulnerabilities via exploration of the archipelago's history and geopolitical dynamics within the context of the war on drugs.

UW’s Project NEXUS (Needle Exchange Utilization Survey) is looking to hire a dynamic Research Coordinator Assistant with experience working within harm reduction principles and Syringe Services Programs.
UW Seattle is hiring for two positions to work providing technical assistance to syringe service programs (SSPs) across the United States, with a focus on monitoring and evaluation as part of the Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center. These positions will assist in responding to technical assistance requests, develop guidance for SSPs around monitoring and evaluation best practices, and help organize and deliver trainings.
