Hi there,
Today, Facebook, Google, TikTok and Twitter — four of the world’s largest tech companies — announced unprecedented commitments to tackle the abuse of women and girls on their platforms.
The announcement, made at the United Nations Generation Equality Forum, is a necessary and positive step to address the crisis of online abuse transforming the web from an engine of opportunity into a platform of oppression for far too many women.
Over the past year, we brought together 120 experts from tech companies, civil society, academia and governments from over 35 countries along with women who have faced online abuse to take part in developing solutions. This work led to concrete results: the companies pledged today to improve systems for reporting abuse and give women more control over their online experience.
We recognise these historic promises. Now, they must lead to action.
Hundreds of women leaders around the world wrote to the CEOs to urge them to follow through on their commitments so that their platforms prevent, rather than fuel, online abuse. Will you join them?
