Dear John,
Thank you for your commitment to the fight to end Alzheimer's disease and all other dementia.
Advocacy is one of our most powerful tools for fighting for the needs and rights of those impacted by this devastating disease and supporting the more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer's. Today, I urge you to make your voice heard on their behalf.
Did you know that Alzheimer's and other dementia disproportionately affect older Black and Hispanic Americans compared to older whites? In fact, Black Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's, and Hispanic Americans are one and a half times more likely to develop the disease.
Yet much of the Alzheimer's research to date has not been representative of the U.S. population, hindering research and restricting knowledge of this disease.
For everyone living with Alzheimer's, everyone affected and everyone at risk, we must change the trajectory of this disease.
The bi-partisan Equity in Neuroscience and Alzheimer's Clinical Trials (ENACT) Act would:
- Expand the number of Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers in areas with higher concentrations of underrepresented populations.
- Increase outreach and awareness of clinical trial opportunities to underrepresented communities and primary care physicians.
- Enhance the diversity of staff conducting clinical trials.
- Provide incentives for locating Alzheimer's clinical trial sites in areas with high concentrations of underrepresented populations.
- Encourage community-based engagement strategies to increase clinical trial participation.
It's up to us to make sure our legislators keep Alzheimer's research funding at the top of their priority list and to build support for this important bi-partisan legislation.
We need caring members of our community, like you, to raise your voice in support of this critical need by urging members of Congress to pass the ENACT Act.
Alzheimer's has no boundaries. The number of lives taken from this cruel disease increased by 145% between 2000 and 2019. Put most simply, Alzheimer's threatens to continue to destroy our families and burden our health care system if we don't advance research.
By adding your voice, you are helping to inspire our leaders to take a stand to address the Alzheimer's crisis. We've made it easy and quick for you, too, by providing sample language for you to use.
Thank you for your support as we continue to fulfill our mission to lead the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.
When we act together, we will make a difference.
Sincerely,
John Funderburk
