Hi,
Chelsea Manning. Edward Snowden. Reality Winner. And...?
At least two more names are about to be added to the list of
whistleblowers who courageously stood up to authoritarian power, at great
personal cost. Two people have already blown the whistle about Trump's
shocking attempt to use Ukraine to undermine the 2020 election. And more
may be ready to speak up.
But Trump is continuing to threaten the people who blew the whistle on
him.^1 We need Congress to step up and do more to protect whistleblowers,
including protecting them from retaliation. Can you help?
[ [link removed] ]Add your name: Tell Congress to deliver new protections for
whistleblowers!
Congress can step up and do more to protect whistleblowers. They can
strengthen existing law to prevent retaliation. They can close loopholes
and clarify reporting rules. The House created a Whistleblower Ombudsman
Office, but the Senate hasn't followed suit.^2
The Ukraine scandal shows why this matters -- and it's just the tip of the
iceberg when it comes to Trump's crimes and violations of the
Constitution.
His Muslim ban, his abusive treatment of immigrant families at the border,
his undermining of Congressional oversight into military deployments, and
his potential personal enrichment -- there's a lot more for the public to
learn about Trump's behavior.
It's likely that there are other government employees, especially in the
intelligence community, who are considering whether to come forward with
new information about Trump. They're surely watching to see whether
Congress and the American people will protect existing whistleblowers from
Trump's threats.
Demand Progress has long fought for whistleblowers, especially those who
have stood up to protect our democracy like Chelsea Manning, Edward
Snowden, Reality Winner, and more. With Trump aggressively threatening
those who blow the whistle on his behavior, we need to once again stand up
for justice. But Congress needs to hear from you now.
