The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Dear John,
A study in the June issue describes trends in Medicare Advantage
enrollment growth.
Growth Trends In Medicare Advantage
For a DataWatch article in the June issue, David Meyers and colleagues
examined growth in Medicare Advantage enrollment
during expansion of the program from 2009 to 2018.
They found that Black and Hispanic beneficiaries, dual enrollees in
Medicare and Medicaid, and residents of areas with the highest level of
neighborhood disadvantage saw the largest increases in enrollment.
They also found that enrollees from racial/ethnic minority groups were
heavily concentrated in specific plans, whereas White enrollees were
more broadly distributed across plans. Further, Hispanic enrollees
tended to select plans with lower premiums. Â
Today on Health Affairs Blog, James Chambers and coauthors discuss how
Medicare should respond
to the FDA's recent decision on aducanumab and propose a "coverage with
evidence development" option for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services.
Elevating Voices: Pride Month: On the final day of Pride Month, we look
back at a recent Health Affairs Blog post by Katie Keith in which she
discusses the Department of Health and Human Services' announcement that
it will interpret Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act to prohibit
discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity
by
federally funded or federally administered health care programs or
activities.
