It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today for the last time as AU’s Vice President of State Outreach and Engagement.

My time at Americans United has been a joy. I can’t think of any place I would have rather been over these last few years, when so much urgent work in defense of religious freedom has been spearheaded by this team.

While my time at AU is coming to a close, my time as an advocate for church-state separation will endure as long as I do – and certainly into my next chapter. I am a nontheist Quaker and seminarian, and soon I will be transitioning into my new position as the General Secretary of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.

Quakers were some of our nation’s first and most ardent supporters of religious freedom and church-state separation, having suffered persecution in England. And I am deeply committed to a world in which all people of any religion and no religion are free to follow their conscience.

In my new role, I’m very excited to bring my perspective and experience to Faith Leaders United, AU’s diverse network of faith leaders from across the United States dedicated to protecting religious freedom for all people.

As you know, I believe in the power of organizing, and in the impact that every one of us can have when we commit ourselves to a cause. That’s why I’m eager to join the work being done by AU’s incredible Action Network. If you want to get more involved in AU’s work, please join me by signing up here.

Finally, I will remain a proud and committed member of Americans United. I’ve seen firsthand the impact that AU’s members have on the work that this organization does. Everything from keeping the lights on, to winning landmark legal cases, to organizing local events – it’s all made possible by AU’s generous members.

If you aren't already an AU member, consider joining me in our ranks today.

Before I sign off, let me say this one last time: THANK YOU, friend, for everything you’ve done to support this movement. I will cherish the memories, friendships, and victories that we forged together during my time at Americans United.

Forward Together,

Sarah Gillooly
VP of State Outreach and Engagement
