We try not to panic over everything that happens at the Supreme Court (even though it’s mostly very bad!), but the agenda for this term is legitimately terrifying. Right off the bat, Neil Gorsuch — an illegitimate justice occupying a stolen seat — could cast the deciding vote on whether LGBTQ+ Americans are protected from discrimination at work.

This is exactly what Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell wanted — they stole this seat from President Obama so conservative extremists like Gorsuch could implement their far-right agenda from the bench. But there’s a way to neutralize Gorsuch’s illegitimate vote: adding seats to the Supreme Court.

Hear us out — the number of justices on the Supreme Court is not established in the Constitution, and we’ve actually changed the number of justices seven times throughout history. And this isn’t some out-there proposal. Former Attorney General Eric Holder supports it, and serious presidential candidates, including Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, and Kamala Harris are open to adding seats.

We need candidates willing to think outside the normal playbook if we want to protect our rights from the GOP’s court takeover — sign our petition asking all Democrats to support adding seats to the Supreme Court.

Because Mitch McConnell was able to steal a Supreme Court seat, Gorsuch may be able to declare that homophobic and transphobic bosses can fire their LGBTQ+ employees under federal law, forcing people to choose between their livelihoods and their authentic selves.

Simply waiting for Court seats to open up — crossing our fingers that that’ll happen when we have both a Democratic president and a Democratic Senate willing to actually hold a confirmation vote — to overturn this kind of decision could take decades. It’s not an option.

But, if we add seats to the Court, Gorsuch’s vote could be neutralized much sooner.

We’re done letting the GOP’s court takeover go unanswered: Tell Democrats to support adding seats to the Supreme Court today.

Together, we can take back the Supreme Court.
