UPDATE: Former President Trump is back at the Southern border today, and John, it is sickening to see him touting his cruel family separation policies as one of his proudest achievements.
It’s also a sober reminder that we are in a race against time to Trump-proof our immigration system, to put a stop to Trump’s harmful policies, and prevent any future president from creating *new family separation* policies.
Families Belong Together is committed to ending every family separation policy that is still in place, while working tirelessly to pass the systemic reforms necessary for the U.S. to lead with compassion and dignity, so family separation never happens again.
We’re only able to keep up this work because of grassroots donations, and right now we’re facing a budget crunch: we’re short in our email fundraising. But if just half the people reading this message donated $25 we’d close that gap in an instant. So I need to ask:
This isn’t just about former President Trump. His visit to the Southern Border comes hot on the heels of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s plans to resurrect Trump’s disastrous Border Wall plans by -- possibly illegally -- having Texas continue construction that had been halted.
It’s part of a dramatic escalation in anti-immigrant rhetoric being deployed by cynical lawmakers with no qualms about using families as political pawns -- and the Families Belong Together team is working to reform laws and change how we talk about families seeking safety so that no administration from the White House to any State House can introduce the kinds of anti-immigrant policies we saw under the Trump administration.
At the same time we’re also ensuring that every family separated by the Trump administration is reunited AND working with an incredible team in Tijuana supporting migrant families.
With so much happening it’d be fair to imagine that Families Belong Together is a large organization, but the reality is our team is just a small team of dedicated, passionate advocates and organizers. And to keep up our work and stay on track financially, we need to close our fundraising shortfall urgently.
Three years ago today we helped lead the Families Belong Together rallies that brought hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of towns and cities across the country.
That day was one of the brightest spots in a dark chapter in our country’s history, and the hope and commitment we came together to create continues to drive our work to ensure family separation is never a part of our immigration system again.
As always, regardless of whether you can donate today or not, thanks for all you do.
