Public Transit = Climate Cooling

Muni serves 26% of trips in San Francisco, but contributes less than 1% of our greenhouse gas emissions. Repeat this often to all your friends concerned about sustainability and climate change. One of the most effective things people can do for the planet and the climate is to avoid riding in a car as much as possible, and hop on Muni instead!

And, Muni continues to go greener. In a first-of-its-kind program, Muni is using GPS technology and geo-fencing to go all electric through Green Zones. The Zones are selected from Muni's Equity Strategy - areas with many senior, disabled, and low income riders, which overlap closely with neighborhoods disproportionately suffering from poor air quality.

This is the kind of innovation and leadership we want in our public transit agency for a more livable, sustainable San Francisco!

Get trained, get involved!

Our list keeps growing, and we're seeing a steady stream of folks signing up to volunteer - let's keep up the momentum! Here are some easy ways you're invited to plug in:

Volunteer Training, Thursday October 17
Come learn about what we do, learn about the state of public transit in San Francisco, and learn how to talk to folks about our 30x30 Rapid Rider Network. Enjoy pizza on us and build the pro-transit movement!

Sunday Streets, October 20
The last Sunday Streets of the season is in the Excelsior, and there will be a pop-up park for the kids! Talk to folks about red lanes down Mission Street, the Excelsior Safety Project, and what routes they want to see Rapid service on.

Support Proposition D - it needs your help!

We've endorsed this modest tax on transportation network companies (TNCs, like Uber and Lyft) that are adding significantly to traffic on our streets. Prop D levies from 10 to 60 cents (depending on the type of ride) on each ride, to raise an estimated $30M each year. This money will specifically go to increased Muni service and to improve our streets. Although Prop D has broad support, it needs a 2/3 vote to pass. They need folks for outreach at Wednesday night phone banks at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and weekend farmers' markets and festivals. Learn more, and sign up here to help out!

NextMuni 2.0: Recap

On October 1, we were treated to a very thorough discussion of the current system and its limitations, and the promise of the next generation. SFMTA is looking to replace the current system over the next year, and then roll out improvements and upgrades over the following year. Some fun features include LCD signs at bus shelters and light rail platforms, including things like real-time maps, crowding information, nearby route alternatives, and live re-route or disruption information.

SFMTA is also procuring solar-powered real-time signs for more remote locations where frequency is lower, ridership is lower, but live information is that much more crucial.

We talked about APIs, ridership data, integration with 3rd-party apps, and signage design. SFMTA promises to return when they have some prototypes to check out!

Clipper takes a first step towards integrating transit fares! The Bay Area has a couple dozen transit agencies which all accept Clipper payment, but can't agree on things like transfer discounts or the age for a youth fare.
