The Fresno County Voter’s Choice Act Advisory Committee is an opportunity for interested members of the community to provide input on how the Voter’s Choice Act is implemented in the county. This year’s meetings will focus on a general amendment and update of the Fresno County Election Administration Plan requiring community feedback on a wide range of Voter’s Choice Act topics.

Meetings are currently planned for the third Wednesday of each month, but those dates might be adjusted after participant feedback from the first two meetings on July 21 and Aug. 18. Each meeting will be held twice, at 4 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The 5:30 p.m. meeting will have online access. Each in-person meeting will be held at the Election Warehouse Training facility (4525 E. Hamilton Ave.). Additional community-based meetings will be held in the fall throughout the county.

Voter’s Choice Act Advisory Committee meetings work best when there is a large turnout of interested and varied community voices. Forward this notice to any persons invested in how elections are to be conducted in Fresno County. An agenda and connectivity information will be available on July 6.

The Writers Alliance is organizing across the Central Valley around the principle that we can make change through effective communication. The goal is to recruit politically active members throughout the Central Valley, and especially in Fresno County, who will engage through “letters to the editor” in local newspapers and online media. The group will consist of writers, researchers, editors, responders and a social media cadre.

The Alliance project was started in Placer and El Dorado counties but is swiftly growing. in Fresno County. David Rowell ([email protected] (mailto:[email protected]?subject=Writers%20Alliance) ) is the county coordinator and the point of contact for people wishing to join in the endeavor.

Training is available to help volunteers understand the best letter format, length, frequencies and other factors that newspapers look for when selecting which submissions to publish. Training will also be available to address stylistic and composition issues for those who want ot polish their writing skills.

California in the summer is hot and dry, and we can all see that is not going to change. It is even worse when the air we breathe is clogged with pollution from fires which catch on the dry grass and trees. Already, Fresno County is having about one notable land or property fire per week, with massive gray plumes of smoke marking them for us from miles away even before it can show up on the news.

Each year serious injuries and millions of dollars in property loss occur across the state from wildfires sparked by fireworks, sparklers and other celebration explosives. After the year we’ve had, finding ways to celebrate is great, but let’s try it without dirtying up the air for those around us with smoke and sparks. Large grass crops and dry vegetation increase the threat for devastating fires throughout all of California.

We have changed many things about our lives over the last year to protect the health of those around us. Maybe this summer we can change one more thing to protect our lungs and our neighbors.

Reducing your personal global warming damage is not only about reducing use but also about consuming strategically. California has a nation leading renewable energy supply, however, as we cannot force the sun and wind to change their schedules, we need to bend instead.

Refraining from using electricity intensive activities like turning on an electric oven, running a clothes dryer or cranking up the AC during certain key hours where there is a lul in renewable supply can help out our situation overall. Reducing peak use will also help in cutting the number and duration of power outages, especially during the hottest weeks.

From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., energy demand is high, and less wind and solar power is available, as solar panels start getting less sun but the regular breezes wind energy relies on have not kicked in as much. By using less electricity during these hours, you can ensure that your energy is coming from cleaner sources.

In the early morning, just as we start our day and start using energy, California taps into a variety of its clean energy sources that are naturally available so electricity use then is more efficient. In the afternoon, as we go through our day and our energy usage continues to grow, California’s many solar power plants come online using the abundant solar potential available, while managing increased demand.

Under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ leadership, our nation is making progress against the Covid-19 pandemic. Today, California has one of the lowest coronavirus transmission levels in the country. Students are returning to classrooms. Weddings are resuming. We’re getting to hug our loved ones again.

But the truth is, we’ve got a long way to go to overcome this pandemic. Forty percent of U.S. adults have not yet gotten the vaccine. Many people continue to have questions about the vaccines or challenges getting vaccinated, especially in the communities hit hardest by the pandemic.

The new Delta variant of the Covid virus is not any more lethal to vaccinated people, but even though vaccination makes it much less likely to catch the disease and if caught vastly lessens symptoms from a hospital ticket to a bad cold, vaccinated people mixing with unvaccinated people can still spread the infection. And even if vaccinated people do not get badly sick, more transmission raises the risk of more variants.

If you cannot confirm everyone’s vaccination status, wearing a mask while packed indoors still vastly cuts down the possibility of catching not only Covid but many other colds and flus. If we do it right, we could even eliminate flu season and make the “common” cold decidedly less common.

Vaccinating as many U.S. adults as possible will require everyone to pitch in—to make calls, send texts and talk to people face-to-face in our communities, answering questions and spreading the word about why it’s so important to get vaccinated. [link removed]
