News From The Week Of October 7 – October 11, 2019

Friend:

You should’ve seen the energy!

On Tuesday, I joined dozens of AU allies and hundreds of grassroots activists, including clergy from a number of different faiths, outside the Supreme Court to rally for critical non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. Together, we were a force to be reckoned with.

The Court heard arguments in three cases that will determine whether or not employers can fire someone because of who they are, who they love, or what they believe. The Court’s decision will affect the rights of all of us to live and work no matter what our boss’s religious beliefs are.

For me, the day was memorable and meaningful, because there was a spirit of inclusion and unity that I associate with the side of America I love. We stood shoulder to shoulder with one of the many marginalized communities we work on behalf of every day – and you should have seen the crowd react to our message! They really got it and were so with us.

Not everyone was able to make it to the Supreme Court for the rally – but that didn’t stop AU’s supporters from taking action. From all across this country, hundreds and hundreds of you signed on from afar to make your voices heard on this issue.

Thank you for being with us at the Court and every day! Your voices amplify our message, and your passion fuels us during these trying times.

With hope and determination,

Americans United Joins Call For LGBTQ Equality At Supreme Court:
Americans United hopes the court will come down on the right side of history and rule that employment discrimination is always wrong, especially when it attempts to use 'religious freedom' as a justification.

Judge-Sponsored Bible Distribution Doesn’t Belong In America’s Courtrooms:
Allegorical representations of Justice show the figure wearing a blindfold for a reason: Justice is supposed to be blind to all comers. If you’re accused of a crime, you’re to be judged fairly despite your race, age, gender, sex, social status or religious beliefs (or lack thereof.)

Times Got You Down? Try This Uplifting Film:
If films could preach, this one would be pounding its first on the pulpit proclaiming, red in the face, that the complexion of religion in America, even in Oklahoma, is changing.
