Friend,
I have a big update in our fight for water as a human right.
Your support has been critical in advancing my Emergency Water is a Human Right Act, which would prohibit water and electricity shutoffs, and ensure water affordability protections for low-income households. But access to clean drinking water isn’t just critical during the pandemic.
In my community and across the country, water affordability has reached crisis levels. In less than a decade, the cost of water has skyrocketed by more than 30%.1 And in communities of color and low-wealth communities, we spend a greater portion of our income on utility bills than wealthier communities.2
Now, my newest water affordability legislation―which has bipartisan support―is moving through Congress. Last week, the Low-Income Water Customer Assistance Programs Act of 2021, successfully passed out of committee and is closer than ever to becoming law.
And this week, the U.S. House will vote on the INVEST in America Act, which contains a 5 year moratorium on water shutoffs. I’ve been personally advocating for the moratorium as I recognize how critical water access is in our fight for justice and equity for all.
Can you pitch in $5 now to join with me and power our fight for water as a human right?
For years, my state of Michigan has been on the frontlines in the fight for water as a human right. For decades, I’ve joined with water warriors in my community to fight for access to clean, affordable drinking water―because water is an environmental, social, and racial justice issue.
My 2021 youth fellowship program is even named after a water warrior from Detroit, Mama Lila Cabbil, whose advocacy influenced my work in demanding water as a human right.
Thanks to you, our national campaign is working. The Biden Administration has expanded access to affordable water for low-income families. But much more needs to be done to address the root causes of water insecurity and leverage federal dollars for the long-term solutions our residents need and deserve.

Together, we’re demanding Congress utilize this once-in-a-generation opportunity to address inequalities that have plagued Black and brown communities and low-income communities for hundreds of years. This is our chance. Thank you for being by my side.
Always serving you,
Rashida
