ACT NOW to stop latest brutal attack on unborn babies

30 June 2021

Dear SPUC supporter,

I am very sorry to have to tell you that pro-abortion MPs have made another bid to hijack the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, at report stage. Dame Diana Johnson MP has tabled an amendment that would completely decriminalise abortion, including abortion up to birth for all unborn babies.  This is New Clause 55.

Thank you for the tremendous effort you made to ensure that the buffer zone amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill was rejected.

Take action

But we have to take urgent action again. New Clause 55 is very serious. If it is selected by the Speaker and passed into law, the last remaining legal protection for unborn babies will be removed.

Please write a simple email to your MP asking him/her to oppose New Clause 55 if it is selected. The debate will take place on 5 July, so please do this as soon as you can.

Some points you can include are:

  • Decriminalising abortion would remove all legal protection from the unborn
  • In removing abortion offences under the Infant Life Preservation Act, New Clause 55 allows abortion up to birth
  • Repealing section 59 of the 1861 Act (procuring drugs to cause abortion), as New Clause 55 seeks to do, would allow anyone to supply the means for an abortion without criminal sanction.

Not the way to help victims of abuse

The Clause also contains a new offence of non-consensual termination of pregnancy – which would include where an abusive partner intentionally or recklessly caused a woman’s abortion through abusive behaviour. While of course we believe that forced abortion should be a criminal offence, this is just a means to make decriminalisation seem more palatable. Removing all protection from unborn babies, up to birth, is not a way to help victims of abuse.

Rupa Huq has also re-tabled her amendment on buffer zones (New Clause 42). Our understanding is that this is unlikely to be selected as it was already debated and rejected in Committee.

Please write to your MP urgently, and share this email with other pro-life supporters. You can find your MP’s contact details here.

Best wishes,

Antonia Tully
