John,

We did it!

The DC Council just passed the bill to end the sale of flavored tobacco products!

This includes flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. It's a truly historic action to protect kids from tobacco addiction, advance health equity and save lives. And it will help end the tobacco industry’s predatory targeting of Black communities with menthol cigarettes – a form of institutional racism that has taken a devastating toll on Black lives and health.

Importantly, the bill will be enforced in ways that protect against any potential law enforcement abuse. DC’s Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs – not the police – will enforce the new law, and enforcement will only be on retailers, not individual consumers. The Council adopted an amendment today to make this explicitly and abundantly clear.

Advocates like you made this possible by contacting lawmakers and stepping up to support this campaign every step of the way. I can't thank you enough.

What's next?

We'll be working with partners across the District to ensure that the new law is funded and effectively implemented. Today's victory also gives a big boost to our campaigns to end the sale of flavored tobacco products in cities and states across the country.

Help us seize this momentum and keep up the fight by becoming a monthly sustaining donor:

We're committed to finishing the job in DC and nationwide. Thank you for standing with us!

Sincerely,

Meghan Kissell
