Law Enforcement News South LA Family Continues A Life Of Service With Daughter At West Point With the Fourth of July just days away, there's a new perspective on the holiday for a volleyball player from South Los Angeles. Kai Nickerson knew she'd play college volleyball she just never expected to be at one of the nation's top military academies, West Point. Nickerson is home in LA for the summer and staying fit with inspiration from her fitness trainer mom Cassandra Britt-Nickerson, a recently retired LAPD Sergeant and cancer survivor. Her father is also retired LAPD. FOX 11 Man Shot And Wounded In South Los Angeles Area A man was wounded Monday in a shooting in the south Los Angeles area. The shooting was reported about 12:40 p.m. in the 7600 block of Halldale Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Paramedics took the wounded man who was not immediately identified, to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity. No arrests were reported, and no suspect information was immediately available. MyNewsLA.com Mother Detained For Questioning After 3 Young Children Found Dead In East L.A. Home Three young children were found dead in an East Los Angeles home Monday afternoon and their mother has been detained for questioning. The incident was reported about 12:45 p.m. along the 600 block of Ferris Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A family member in the home called authorities about two children who were possibly not breathing, Lt. Chuck Calderaro said. Responding deputies found three children in a bedroom who were unresponsive and not breathing. Despite life-saving measures, the children were pronounced dead at the scene, Calderaro said. KTLA 5 Non-Verbal Girl To Be Reunited With Family After Being Found In Ladera Heights Area, LAPD Says A non-verbal girl was on her way home to be reunited with her family after being found Monday morning in the Ladera Heights area, the LAPD said. The LAPD released a photo of the girl, adding that she possibly has autism and is about 10 years old. She was found in the area of Knowlton Street and La Tijera Boulevard around 9:30 a.m., police said. ABC 7 LAPD Commission May Expand 911 Diversion Program With Didi Hirsch Services The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners Tuesday will consider expanding the LAPD’s one-year pilot program contract with mental health professionals to respond to certain 911 calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The board voted unanimously on Jan. 26 to authorize Police Chief Michel Moore to execute an agreement with Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services to have their psychiatric professionals respond to some nonviolent calls from noon to 8 p.m. each day. MyNewsLA.com Search On For 2 Teen Sisters Last Seen In North Hills Authorities are searching for two teenage sisters who were last seen Monday in the North Hills neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley. Brenda Castro, 15, and Angie Garcia, 14, were last seen around 5 a.m. Monday in the area of Nordhoff Street and Aqueduct Avenue. According to Los Angeles police, the two were in a car with their mother on their way from San Diego to Oakland when the mother pulled over at the Nordhoff Street exit along the 405 Freeway because of an argument. CBS 2 Man Who Tried To Breach Cockpit And Jumped From Plane At LAX Faces Federal Charges The man who tried to breach the cockpit of a United Express flight Friday night and then proceeded to jump off the plane after being unsuccessful will face federal charges. The man who was aboard a SkyWest Airlines flight taxiing to the runway at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday evening, allegedly approached the cockpit — banging on the cockpit door and trying to enter the restricted space — before opening an emergency exit and jumping to the tarmac, according to a federal criminal complaint made public Monday. NBC 4 Pacoima Man Charged With Manslaughter In Monrovia Freeway Crash That Killed A Woman, 95 A San Fernando Valley man pleaded not guilty Monday to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with a multi-vehicle crash on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Monrovia that left a 95-year-old woman dead and another woman critically injured. Humberto Gonzalez, 49, of Pacoima, was charged Friday and is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail. Los Angeles Daily News Koreatown Dentist Accused Of Sexually Abusing Patients Pleads Not Guilty A 50-year-old dentist charged with sexually abusing nine patients at his Koreatown office pleaded not guilty Monday to more than a dozen counts. Emad Fathy Moawad, who has dual citizenship in Egypt and the U.S., made his initial court appearance two weeks ago on nine counts of sexual battery by restraint, three counts of sexual penetration by use of force and one count of attempted sexual penetration by use of force. CBS 2 California Deputy Killed In Crash While Responding To A Call A California sheriff’s office is mourning the loss of Deputy Anthony Redondo, who was killed in the line of duty on Saturday. According to KESQ, Redondo was responding to a call in an unmarked patrol car when he collided with another vehicle. Redondo died at the scene. “This was a young man who had a very bright future in front of him,” said Imperial County Sheriff Ray Loera to KYMA. “Obviously it’s going to be a significant loss to the agency and quite frankly to the community.” PoliceOne Public Safety News Fire Breaks Out At West Hills Home A fire broke out at a two-story home in the West Hills neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley Monday morning. CBS 2 Los Angeles Metro Opens Vaccination Site Near 70 Bus Line In Boyle Heights A new COVID-19 vaccination site opens this week on an LA Metro-owned property near Bus Line 70 in Boyle Heights, LA Metro announced Monday. People can get a free Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccine without an appointment at the site, located at 339 N. Fickett St., between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, LA Metro said.
