Regions all across the western U.S. are already seeing their largest droughts in decades. With over 90% of Utah currently undergoing extreme drought, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox asked state residents to pray for rain.
John,
According to a draft report from the United Nations, water scarcity and drought are set to wreak global damage to rival the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic. But unlike the global health crisis, there is no vaccine to cure the coming drought disasters.
Droughts have already caused at least $124 billion in economic losses and impacted more than 1.5 billion people between 1998 and 2017. The rate of negative impacts is only expected to accelerate as climate change continues to worsen and we reach environmental tipping points.
Scientists have concluded that global warming has already intensified droughts in Europe and Africa, and the number of victims will continue to rise unless we make changes now.
Global droughts will impact more than just the countries with water shortages. Crops will be harder to grow, food prices will rise. Eventually people will begin to migrate away from the hardest hit areas, creating climate refugees.
About 130 countries could face greater risk of drought this century, and more than 40% of the European Union’s agricultural imports could become highly vulnerable by mid-century if things stay the same.

Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
