This week, the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill was "sponsored" by
Facebook.

Politico was "presented" by Amazon and Bank of America.

Even NPR routinely accepts corporate sponsorships from corporations like
ExxonMobil, Comcast, and the American Petroleum Institute.

These news outlets all insist that their corporate funding has no
influence on their journalism, and no doubt their reporters strive for
independence.

But at Common Dreams, we don't believe that you can take money from
wealthy and powerful corporations and be truly independent at the same
time. These corporations don't give money to news outlets out of the
goodness of their hearts. They do it because they think they're getting
something.

That's why we aren't sponsored by anyone but you, our readers.

However, I'm going to be honest with you. We're facing serious threats
to our reader-driven funding model right now. First, traffic to the
Common Dreams from Google and Facebook fell sharply and suddenly last
year, apparently due to a change in their algorithms. Second, donations
to progressive organizations are down across the board since Donald
Trump left office.

That makes our current Mid-Year Campaign even more critical than usual
so we can continue to provide the nonprofit independent journalism you
count on every day.

Please chip in whatever you can to help us meet our Mid-Year Campaign
