Dear friends,
“What’s it to you?”
- The colloquial way the U.S. Supreme Court explained “standing” in a new Opinion issued last week.
“I would think at this point the government might take a look at what courts can do to be helpful…I was hopeful your argument might have been different today.”
- Judge Ann Aiken to Department of Justice attorneys who are trying to stop Juliana v. U.S.
““The worst is yet to come, affecting our children’s and grandchildren’s lives much more than our own.”
- Julia Olson, attorney for the Youth Plaintiffs, quoting a recently leaked UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, which Judge Aiken said she also intended to read.

A Pivotal Moment
The proclamations above were all made during oral arguments last Friday in Juliana v. United States, as Our Children’s Trust attorneys for the 21 youth plaintiffs, and defense attorneys for the Department of Justice, argued their positions telephonically on the youths’ motion to amend their complaint in front of U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken.
We are optimistic that Friday’s court proceedings will prove to be another pivotal moment advancing this landmark climate lawsuit - the case that launched the global wave of youth-led, rights-based climate litigation!

In the meantime, you can also read the opening statement made by Julia Olson, Chief Legal Counsel at Our Children’s Trust and counsel for the youth plaintiffs, on our website here ([link removed]) .
“Your Honor, how our nation’s children (and adults) speak, move, love, vote, worship, assemble, learn, and behave in our world is a function of the rights we hold, and those we are denied. For our rights to endure, in the face of government policy threats, they need to be declared.”
- Julia Olson, Chief Legal Counsel
