This Month
In the lead-up to the Senate Republicans’ filibuster of the democracy strengthening For the People Act (S. 1), People For was proud to play an instrumental role in turning out hundreds of activists to rally and deliver more than 330,000 coalition signatures in support of the bill. People For President Ben Jealous spoke along with a dozen lawmakers, including Senators Elizabeth Warren, Raphael Warnock, and Amy Klobuchar, as well as other leaders of national civil rights and pro-democracy organizations. Watch their speeches here! As June and Pride Month come to a close this week, the Far Right continues its relentless attacks on the rights and equality of the LGBTQ+ community in an attempt to reduce current complex scientific research on transgender athletes to misleading talking points and fearmongering. Right Wing Watch released an in-depth report that puts these attacks in historical context and outlines how the Far Right is using disinformation to target transgender people. Please tune in to co-author Kristen Doerer’s video introduction and then make sure to read the report itself! June was a busy month for our Young Elected Officials, who did everything from fight to defend voting rights to advocate for greater LGBTQ+ representation at all levels of government. Three of our network’s members were featured in a series of videos advocating for the importance of the small donor financing provisions of the For the People Act, and they spoke at rallies to defend the Black vote throughout the South during the Freedom Ride for Voting Rights 2021. Check out all their important work below! The Young Elected Officials Network is a nonpartisan program of our affiliate People For the American Way Foundation. Ketanji Brown Jackson, nominated by President Biden to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, was confirmed this month in a bipartisan 53-44 vote, beginning the repair work to the federal appellate courts so damaged by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell. Given Judge Jackson’s brilliance, her commitment to justice, and her years of experience both on and off the bench, she is the exactly the right person to be confirmed to the powerful D.C. appellate court. We can’t wait to see what other qualified nominees President Biden brings to the table during his administration. Please click on each headline to read the full article...
